JOEY AKUBEZE

Joey is a British Nigerian actor and writer based in London. He studied at Cambridge University and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Joey can currently be seen on Hulu / Disney+ in Marissa Jo Cerar’s series BLACK CAKE and will soon be seen in Joy Wilkinson’s debut feature 7 KEYS which premiered at SXSW. Joey played the role of ‘Hugo’ in Colm McCarthy’s Netflix series THE BASTARD SON AND THE DEVIL HIMSELF. He also worked on the hit Netflix show BRIDGERTON.

He recently performed at the Omnibus Theatre in Lesia Ukrainka’s CASSANDRA, directed by Helen Eastman. Further theatre credits include the starring role in Eloka Ivo and Saul Boyer's play FIVE YEARS WITH THE WHITE MAN which premiered at VAULT Festival in 2023 and went on to play at the King’s Head Theatre in London.

His film credits include roles in THE DRIFTERS directed by Ben Bond, Disney’s CRUELLA directed by Craig Gillespie, and Anthony Byrne’s IN DARKNESS. Joey starred in and co-wrote the short film ACRIMONIOUS directed by Olivia Emden. It was nominated as one of the top five short films to watch at BFI Flare festival 2021, and was also selected for the BAFTA-qualifying London Short Film Festival and the Copenhagen Short Film Festival. His further television credits include Harry and Jack Williams’ BOAT STORY for Amazon, THE PERIPHERAL directed by Alrick Riley for Amazon, TED LASSO directed by Zach Braff for Apple and ILL BEHAVIOUR directed by Steve Bendelack for the BBC.

Joey can speak French fluently and is a highly skilled singer and pianist. Joey is also a published journalist, including his impressive article “A leap from faith” for Cause & Effect Magazine about leaving the Mormon faith.
