James’ breakthrough role was aged seventeen in David Michod’s crime drama ANIMAL KINGDOM opposite Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton. More recently, James appeared in Kitty Green’s film THE ROYAL HOTEL in which he stars opposite Julia Garner, and he can also be seen in MASTERS OF THE AIR which released on Apple TV in 2024. In 2024 James shot the lead role in Justin Oakey's new feature HANGASHORE which filmed in Newfoundland and a film called HUNTINGTON directed by John Patton Ford with Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley and Ed Harris. In 2022 James starred as the American gangster ‘Jack Nicholson’ in the sixth series of PEAKY BLINDERS. Other recent credits include starring opposite Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea and Jim Broadbent in BLACK 47 directed by Lance Daly and playing opposite Lily James in the hit BBC mini-series THE PURSUIT OF LOVE.

Further credits include a BBC series called REQUIEM directed by Kris Mrksa, the hit Amazon show TRANSPARENT, Anne Fontaine’s film ADORE and more recently THE DRY with Eric Bana directed by Robert Connolly.
